Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, has entered into a landmark agreement with Airbus for a seven-year Flight Hour Services (FHS) contract, reinforcing its commitment to operational excellence and fleet reliability. The deal, covering the airline’s fleet of 24 Airbus A350 aircraft, marks a significant step in optimising maintenance efficiency and enhancing passenger experience.
The agreement encompasses both the A350-900 and A350-1000 models, ensuring Ethiopian Airlines benefits from Airbus’ extensive material support, including dedicated on-site stock in Addis Ababa, access to global spare parts pools, and comprehensive repair and engineering assistance. The contract will play a crucial role in reducing aircraft downtime, streamlining maintenance operations, and improving overall efficiency.
Strategic partnership for operational excellence
Retta Melaku, Chief Operating Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, highlighted the significance of the agreement in maintaining the airline’s reputation for service reliability. “As the first African operator of the A350 Family, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of performance and reliability across our fleet. Partnering long-term with Airbus through this FHS agreement will help us optimise operations, reduce maintenance-related delays, and ensure our passengers continue to experience the best in safety, comfort, and service.”
Ethiopian Airlines has been a key Airbus partner, having introduced the A350-900 into its fleet in 2016 and the A350-1000 in November 2024. By leveraging Airbus’ extensive engineering expertise and global logistics network, the airline aims to enhance component availability and ensure seamless operations across its global routes.
Commitment to supporting airlines
Laurent Negre, Vice President of Customer Services for Airbus Africa and the Middle East, underscored the importance of the agreement in enhancing airline efficiency. “This partnership reinforces Airbus’ commitment to delivering tailor-made maintenance solutions that support airlines in achieving the highest levels of operational efficiency. We are proud to support Ethiopian Airlines with our Flight Hour Services solution to enhance fleet reliability and streamline maintenance operations for its A350s.”
Airbus Flight Hour Services (FHS) is a comprehensive maintenance solution designed to help airlines ensure component reliability and availability while managing costs. The programme integrates pooled inventory, on-site stock, and specialised engineering support, allowing airlines to focus on operations rather than logistical complexities. Over 1,400 aircraft worldwide currently operate under Airbus FHS agreements, underscoring its effectiveness in maintaining fleet reliability.
